Why Paint Cedar Siding?

Cedar is a good fit for exterior surfaces, offering natural impact resistance and moisture resistance. However, to give a cedar siding house the best protection against the elements, it’s essential to apply durable paint or seal. Here are several advantages of painting cedar:

Complete moisture resistance: Unprotected cedar tends to warp or crack. Painting with Rhino Shield makes cedar siding impervious to moisture in warm and cold climates.

Long-lasting and vibrant colors: Fading is a common issue with cedar. Fortunately, painting cedar with Rhino Shield ceramic microspheres maintains your home’s same bold exterior after decades.

Superior protection against damage: The mildewcide paint additive, algaecide, and fungicide of Rhino Shield protects all cedar varieties against rotting, mold, and insects, like never before.

Dependable fire resistance: Homeowners with cedar siding are often concerned about fire risks. Rhino Shield is Class A Fire & Smoke Rated, so it offers the best rating possible for fire resistance.

Reduced maintenance requirements: With Rhino Shield, you don’t have to worry about sanding and replacing flaking paint or seal every few years. Your home looks gorgeous for 25 years or more.

Cedar lasts, but the stain and materials used to treat it sure don’t. Rhino Shield is a great answer to putting a long-lasting, permanent paint coating on cedar homes and siding.

What Steps Are Required for Painting Cedar?

The first step in painting cedar is to clean the wood and repair any cracks. Next, our professionals prime the wood. Priming allows the protective coating to penetrate deeply into cedar. After that, a thick topcoat is applied to lock in the benefits permanently. This topcoat can be tinted to the color of your choosing.

On Luis and Eric

and the other two gentlemen that did the pre work were more than professional, and very kind in every way, and helpful in every way and kept me informed of what was going on each step of the way
Our house was painted by Rhino Shield now over 5 years, you cannot see any cracks and the color has not faded. We now know that we’ve made a great decision and we still have many more years of warranty. Guillermo Figueroa P.
Just wanted to take a minute to say thank you to the people at Rhino Shield Tucson. Everyone we came in contact with was very helpful. Crystal at the office was quick to respond from the day we requested an estimate. Richard our salesperson did a great job and was very knowlegable about the product, all our questions were answered fully. Luis and his crew did an amazing job of prepping and applying the product to our home (it was alot of work). Everything looked amazing and all the items that were moved were put back perfectly. A complete walk around of the property after completion found nothing needed to be done and looked awesome. Thanks again for all the work you did. Highly recommend.
We had a great experience with Judith who did our installation. She was very professional, courteous and informative. We had to be gone for the afternoon, so she updated us with photos. I would highly recommend Galaxy concrete coatings.

Rhino Shield in Arizona: What I Learned, What It Costs, and If It’s Worth It?

For starters, what I learned is that the best paints available today—such as high-quality options like Sherwin-Williams Duration or Emerald—can still perform very well, typically lasting around 7–10 years in Arizona conditions.

Modern paints today are:
• More flexible
• Better at resisting cracking
• Improved UV resistance compared to lower-grade paints often found at big box stores

So, it’s not that all paint is worse today—it’s that quality matters more than ever, especially in Arizona’s extreme sun.

Rhino Shield, however, is not a traditional paint. It’s more of a ceramic coating that is:
• Applied much thicker than standard paint
• Designed to reflect UV exposure
• Built to handle expansion and contraction, especially on stucco homes

Why do people choose it in Arizona?
• It claims a longer lifespan (20–25 years vs. ~7–10 for traditional paint)
• Better resistance to fading and cracking
• Performs well under extreme heat and sun exposure

Reality check:
• It can last longer, but proper prep work and installer quality are critical. Rhino Shield includes prep work and uses a special primer that etches into the existing surface—something many traditional painters either skip or charge extra for, and it matters more than people realize.
• It is significantly more expensive upfront (roughly 2–3x the cost of standard paint)
• Nothing is perfect—especially in Arizona’s heat and sun—so some homeowners dol report fading over time, just at a slower rate

One important thing to understand is that repairs are typically not included with any painter’s estimate. This can include stucco repair, woodwork, sealing around windows, and similar items. These can be negotiated (often at a reasonable cost) with the Rhino Shield contractor, but costs can add up quickly. My advice: don’t cut corners here. Since the coating is only as good as the surface underneath, it makes sense to address everything properly upfront—especially if you expect to benefit from the long-term warranty.

From the start, we had a no-cost in-home estimate with Richard B. from Rhino Shield, who was very thorough. He walked through the process at a comfortable pace, allowed plenty of time for questions and answers, and brought sample materials to demonstrate the ceramic coating. The full process—especially the prep work—was explained clearly, which helped tie everything back to how the warranty is supported. There was no high-pressure sales approach; he let the product speak for itself. I came away understanding much more than expected, especially what I was paying for beyond just the brand name.

As for the contractor working with Rhino Shield, this part is important. I’ve worked with contractors before, and I can say that Ulysses Trujillo (Custom Painting/Repairs) and his crew stood out. They listened, made helpful suggestions, were ready and willing to provide repairs, and kept me informed throughout the process. I received regular updates, including texts and photos showing progress, which made a big difference.
If any issues came up, they addressed them right away. Communication was open, honest, and respectful—exactly how it should be. Their advice was solid and on point, which made the overall experience much smoother than past projects I’ve had with other contractors.

Would I recommend Rhino Shield? Not because of the price—but because you get what you pay for. The warranty is a big plus, and the fact that it’s transferable when you sell your home adds real value.
Overall, I’m very happy I went with Rhino Shield. The house looks better than I expected, and even the neighbors have noticed and commented on the results.
